San Ramon Valley MLK Day Commemoration and Call to Service

Observed the third Monday in January each year, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day honors the life and legacy of the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which protested racial discrimination in federal and state law and civil society. In 1994, Congress designated the holiday as the first and only National Day of Service—a “Day On, Not a Day Off”—inviting people to volunteer to improve their communities. 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of this effort and the first organized effort in the San Ramon Valley.

This year, people of all ages and abilities from across the San Ramon Valley are invited to gather to honor Rev. Dr. King’s memory through reflection and service. We will gather for a time of reflection (in-person and via Zoom) that includes a community reading of Rev. King’s Letter from Birmingham Jail and before dispersing to joyfully engage in acts of service that include opportunities for folx unable to join in person.
